Apply The Tree Sunscreen Now
Last week we talked about planting shade trees and the many benefits of doing so! Proper planting is of utmost importance in the longevity of trees and proper planting isn't just in how big to dig the hole, but also in keeping the main structure of the tree in good health until it is well established. Perhaps the most important aspect of that in Arizona where we get so many sunny days is to protect the trunk of newly planted or thin skinned trees.
If the trunk of a tree receives too much sun it can become damaged just as our skin does. If this damage is too severe, the outer protective layer of the tree's trunk may begin to die an peel away. This causes several problems. Unlike human skin plants don't have the ability to replace those damaged cells and they just get "walled" off and become a big scar. This may cause cosmetic issues, but more importantly it becomes a place for secondary invaders to appear. Fungus,Sooty canker, insects and so on now have a place to live and thrive. This damaged spot if deep enough may also inhibit the flow of water and nutrients up and down the tree's system. As you can see protection of the trunk and major limbs is a must until the tree is large enough to provide shade for itself.
Methods of protection are: Tree Paint-we suggest using Go Natural which is almost invisible and actually does a better job blocking out the damaging sun than the traditional white! Tree Wrap: wraps may come in various materials and colors from white gauze like material to cardboard like. As long as they are breathable materials and can expand as the trunk grows any should be ok. Almost all trees would benefit from trunk protection but the most important are fruit trees, and citrus trees, ficus,ash and any other that has a light colored or smooth skin-lacking a protective type bark. And don't just do this in the summer. Sun damage can occur anytime of year and in the case of deciduous trees can actually be worse in the winter when no leaves are present to provide shade-do it year round at time of planting is our advise!

What Is Preemergent!

Pre emergent herbicides are designed to do one thing,save you time! They prevent the emergence or sprouting of weeds! If you don't even get weeds then you don't have to spray,hoe,or dispose of dead unwanted debris! We have several options in stock. One option is a spray by Monterey called Weed Impede. If you have large rock or gravel areas it is probably the way to go. We have a granular product,Amaze, great for gardens and flower beds. If you would like an organic option we also carry Corn Gluten. You can use this in a garden or on a lawn, it also is 9% nitrogen so it fertilizes as well as prevents weeds. Be sure not to use any of these products in areas where you might want to plant something from seed in the near future!

Early January Gardening

With the holidays behind us it is sometimes tough to get back into the swing of gardening tasks. If you're anything like me, however, you could use some exercise! As we took down the decorations some gardening activities arrived about as slyly as old St. Nick. It is time to plant! Grape vines, Strawberries,Artichokes,Black and Boysenberries,and many varieties of deciduous fruit trees have arrived and are ready to plant. Be sure that you follow our planting directions for best success. These plantings need to get off to a fast start and proper soil preparation is key to success! Also remember our lifetime guarantee applies to the berries and trees if you follow the proper techniques.
When planting what we once called "bare root" plants we suggest that you take them home and plant them immediately. We have pre soaked and potted these plants to that the roots don't dry out. A Letter From Bill Hamilton

December 20, 2009 So, I'm reading an article in the paper this morning that is recounting the big stories of the past decade. Its subtitle: Past decade filled with dread-but also offers much hope. It recalls 9/11, natural disasters, political unrest, financial fallout, as well as surviving miners, cancer vaccines and a miraculous landing in the Hudson river. The events are huge. They have caused us to weep in sadness and joy. They, and many like them, have had global impact or at least expression. We know the name of the woman protestor killed in Tehran and the pilot who landed his plane in the Hudson. We have images on You Tube and words on Twitter invading our everyday world. And, if you are like me, it can all be very overwhelming and leave the reader (me and you) with a sense of insignificance, anxiety and hopelessness. Big world- sized stories are, for the most part, not personal and leave us with a sense of helplessness and often hopelessness. Friends, PLEASE don't allow the 'big news' to overshadow how the Good News was present all around you in this past decade. Just within my city, my small group of friends, I have witnessed dead and damaged marriages be reconciled. I know of sick people who have been healed. My Young Life friends bombard me with stories of lost kids being found. Homeless are being housed. People with real names are being loved and cared for by people I really know. They are not on You Tube, they may not have a Face Book account and there's no people waiting to Twitter their every move. They are the people who make up my community. You have them too. Our little worlds are filled with them. We are surrounded - therefore we are significant. We can make the "news" that will save a life. Our 'news' will not be turned into an image or a sound bite for the world to see. This news (knowledge) will only be known by a few. Good news comes quietly to one heart at a time. Then it moves slowly in and through a family and often leaks out into a community. This good news doesn't find its way into the media where it becomes bigger than life and gets exploited. The life changing stories we all have had the privilege of participating in, or at least been affected by, are the really big stories of this past decade. Do yourself a favor today and take time to recall some of them. In the time it takes for you to read the news you can write the news - the real news. The news that is; real people with real names that live on real streets. The real Good News has always avoided the spotlight, never needed the media and chose to quietly bring joy and hope to people along his path. The kingdom of God was not ushered into the world with front page hype and it (He) doesn't require it still. Might you determine to find peace and joy in the little miracles that surround your everyday life in this coming decade. Be a Kingdom person and change the world one story at a time. National Poinsettia Day is December the 12th

Did you know that the poinsettia has a special day all its own? By an Act of Congress, December 12th was set aside as National Poinsettia Day.
It is in honor of Joel Roberts Poinsett, who died on December 12, 1851. Poinsett was the first US Ambassador to Mexico and is credited with introducing the native Mexican plant to the United States. He grew the plants in his Greenville, S.C plantation and gave them out as gifts to friends. In addition to recognizing Poinsett, the purpose of the day is to enjoy the beauty of this popular holiday plant.
In Mexican folklore, there is a story of a little poor girl who had nothing to bring to church for Christmas. On her way to church, she picked some plants by the side of the road. As she entered the church, the ends of the leaves turned into bright, brilliant red flowers. You guessed it... Poinsettias.
This year, share the beauty of this holiday tradition by giving someone a poinsettia on December 12th... National Poinsettia Day!

Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

Having had such warm weather all fall, December has sent us a reminder that winter is here! Although not official until the 21st we are definitely getting weather that should put us all in the Christmas/Holiday spirit! Be sure you are adjusting your irrigation controllers, in fact most of us should have them turned off for a few days now!! This is the time of year when we can really conserve the most water, and most people over water drastically during the winter months. If we do in fact have an "El Nino" this winter, you can usually get by without having to water much at all! I used to ask my kids while they were in grade school, every December the 7th at the end of the school day, what today was. After a few years they knew because It was the only day of the year I every asked about! I listened to news on my way to and from work today and didn't hear a word about Pearl Harbor! So in case you missed it December 7th 1941 "a day that will live on in infamy" maybe really hasn't! Don't know about you but i won't forget what that day means and how blessed we are to live in the greatest county on God's green earth!!!

As usual, Mr. Frank has his TREE TIME lot at the Scottsdale location, but for the first time we are offering trees at our Mesa store. Poinsettia Festival in Review

Thank to all of you who came out last weekend in support of our Poinsettia Festival. A marvelous time was had by all and best of all we raised several hundred dollars for the Kachina Womens Club to donate to in need Scottsdale School children!! Thanks again from the bottom of our hears for participating as a vendor or by just showing up and making a difference. We sold lots of poinsettias but there is still a great environment for taking pictures at both green houses for another weekend or two. Most of the larger orders don't go out until the middle of December so still a great background for pics. All 8" and larger poinsettias are on sale for 20% off!! Hurry though the 6" are basically sold out! Happy Thanksgiving to all and thanks to the Robbins family,Mr. Mike pictured above, for those fabulous home grown turkeys!

Harper's and Oscar's Coffee Bar are hosting a Charity Fundraiser Car Wash Saturday November 14th 9am till 2pm at our Scottsdale location 2529 N Hayden Rd. The benefits go to the Klimaszewski Family as Ted's brother battles with cancer. There are also prizes from Celebrity Theater, a signed baseball by Brandon Webb and more. Now we know why we endure those long hot Summers. It is October and the air just smells cooler. Cabin fever is over and it is time to get outside and enjoy the rest of your home-remember it? Time To Go Green

If you plan to have a "green" lawn this winter, now is the time to prepare for that. Overseeding with ryegrass is necessary to have a green lawn here during the winter months. The time for doing that is October. When the nights get in the mid 60 degree range we can scalp the existing summer lawn and overseed it with a cool season grass, usually perennial ryegrass, that will stay nice and green when we feel like being outside and enjoying our lawns the most. It is Here indeed!!Fall that is. According to the calendar and my skin Fall has arrived right on time. I know the days can still be warm for a while yet but the mornings and evenings are glorious-the pool is almost too cool to get into all of a sudden. That means the time to plant fall vegetable gardens is here in earnest, geraniums are looking great. we've received most of the fall bulbs for planting and there is not a better time to plant a tree than now-well if you didn't do it 20 years ago! Ready set plant-hope to see you in the garden!

Bermuda Grass Conversion

Late August and in to September is a great time to convert from a turf type landscape to a low water use xeriscape theme. The reason is that grasses become much easier to kill this time a year as their growth is still rapid enough but they are also trying to store up carbs for a long winter rest. In doing this they are "super absorbent" of herbicide and the kill is much more effective. So if you have had any thoughts about taking on this project, especially if you just received your latest water bill, don't delay. Once the weather cools considerably the rate of kill becomes slow and ineffective and eventually impossible. If you are looking for help in this or any other kind of project be sure to give our landscape department a call 602-659-5994!

They are forecasting for a relatively cool weekend and the possibility of some rain! As fall vegetable season has begun this would be a great week end to at least get the soil prepared. The "Garden Tips" link on our home page has a garden prep guide and a list of what veggies you can plant when! The key to gardening success is the soil preparation. Don't skimp-you have ample of time take it and do a good job being sure to add all the necessary amendments. You'll be glad you did!

Harper's August Garden Guide
The Last Full Month Of Summer

Well now it is time to come home from the beach, or your usual summer haunts and get a ways and start settling into that fall routine. I know it is August. For me August means the last full month of Summer and Fall is just around the corner. Kids start back to school and we start looking around the yard wondering what the heck happened to our beautiful Spring garden? It is time to get back to work or at least evaluating what worked and what didn't in the garden. I can't wait till September!

August is a great month to evaluate what has worked and what perhaps hasn't done so well. This summer has been one of extremes and is a good test for what plants you may want to continue with and which ones maybe not so much. It is also a great time to ask why something didn't do so well. Many times our water system is inadequate and those shortcomings don't show up until exteme temperatures arrive. Perhaps we planted too late, or it was just not the right plant for the right place! We hope you will find confidence in us to help you in this evaluation process. Our many years of experience can help you not only pick the right plants, but help with timing and planning of how,where,and when the plant is best used in our desert environment. Remember we also offer as far as we know the only "lifetime plant guarantee" in the industry. This should help you be assured that we have confidence in our plants and our people to steer you in the right direction.
Believe it or not this is the month that Fall gardening really gets going again. First of all we can't emphasize enough to properly prepare the soil! Visit our stores or website for our Garden Preparation Guide. Don't start until you've read this and have taken the time to get the soil ready to plant. This guide also has the proper planting dates for flowers and vegetables for our specific environment. If you follow this guide we know you'll have success. Want more help-remember that the 3rd Saturday of Every Month we hold a garden class at 10am at both locations!

Mulch and Feed, Feed and Mulch
August is a good time to start fertilizing most all of our plants, especially tropicals and subtropicals. Citrus,hibiscus,ficus,palms,mexican bird of paradise,lantana.....you get the idea. A feeding this time of year will not only help these plants recover from a long hot summer but will also help them get thru and recover from the upcoming winter ahead.
Another way to insure your plants get thru the last part of Summer is to keep them properly mulched. Mulching with a bark mulch is like putting a cool cloth on the back of your neck. It cools the soil and roots of the plant down allowing it to function more efficiently and will reduce sun damaged foliage. Mulching will also allow you to water less and cuts down on weeds. When in doubt MULCH IT.

I guess we didn't think we were getting out enough so we have entered the world of social networking! We now have a Facebook page under Harper's Nursery and Landscape Co.
